Completing our talk on the 1964 World's Fair, we discuss the history of General Electric's Carousel of Progress, and the frantic pace needed to develop Pepsi's last-minute Fair entry, it's a small world.
The idea behind the General Electric pavilion had been in development for a number of years, as a possible addition to Disneyland. It's an interesting story, though, to hear how the Disneyland idea morphed into a high-capacity World's Fair attraction.
Pepsi's pavilion is a whole other ball of wax. As late as 1963, Pepsi didn't have any idea as to what they were going to do. It took Joan Crawford (yes, that Joan Crawford) to get them to talk to Walt. And what's great about the story of small world's development is that it shows every bit of Walt's talent, from coming up with the ride idea, to choosing the right artists, to knowing a catchy song when he heard it.
Did we really say "catchy song?" Forgive us.
